Image Reconstruction
This first assignment will engage with a close reading of a kind of “body”—either non-human or human—by recreating it. In your process of reconstruction, consider the original scale of the image, how it was made, what materials were used, and who was involved. Then, to your best ability, acquire the materials to reproduce the image to scale. Write a 300-word description to your process, first introducing the image/object before relaying the liberties you took. In your writing, be cautious about u sing words like “cognition” and in particular, be sensitive to how the “sensations” have been historicized in the course readings. Images should be approved by the instructor beforehand.

Illustration by Sir Charles Bell, in his The anatomy of the brain, explained in a series of engravings. London: Printed by C. Whittingham for T. N. Longman and O. Rees, 1802.
Bell explained the plate: “From this Plate much of the general Anatomy and subdivisions of the Brain may be learnt. It represents the scull-cap taken off. On the left side, the Dura Mater investing the Brain; while the right hemisphere of the Cerebrum is seen covered only by the Vascular Pia Mater. The hemispheres, which are naturally divided by the Falx, are here separated a little, so as to enable us to look down upon the Corpus Callosum, and see the branches of the Anterior Artery of the Cerebrum, and the Artery of the Corpus Callosum.”
